For informational use only. Use the written lease quote for actual terms, taxes, fees, and due-at-signing amounts. This standard monthly-tax estimate is not a credit offer or a complete lease disclosure.
How to use this tool
- 1Copy MSRP, negotiated price, term, residual, and money factor from the lease quote.
- 2Separate capitalized fees, cash reduction, and fees paid upfront. Enter a monthly tax rate only if it matches the quote.
- 3Compare the payment components and total cash with the written lease offer.
How the result is built
Residual is MSRP × residual percentage. Adjusted cap cost is selling price + capitalized fees − cash reduction. Monthly depreciation is (cap cost − residual) ÷ term; monthly rent is (cap cost + residual) × money factor. The entered tax applies to their sum.
An example from the lot
Try $40,000 MSRP, a $38,000 selling price, 60% residual, 36 months, a 0.002 money factor, $695 capitalized fees, $2,000 cash reduction, and 7% monthly tax. Change one quote term at a time to see which component moves.
A practical guide to this calculation
Use this worksheet at the sales or finance desk to explain where a quoted lease payment comes from. Instead of treating the monthly payment as one unexplained number, separate the vehicle's modeled depreciation, the rent charge, and the tax assumption. All values come from the quote or assumptions you enter; the tool does not retrieve lease programs, incentives, or credit tiers.

Pull the right numbers from the lease worksheet
MSRP and selling price serve different jobs. The residual percentage is applied to MSRP, while the negotiated selling price starts the capitalized-cost calculation. A discount can reduce the payment without changing the contract residual. Use the full term in months and the exact decimal money factor supplied for that quote.
Put a fee in one place: either capitalized into the lease or paid upfront. The cash-down field means a capitalized-cost reduction, not the entire amount due at signing. The separate upfront-fees field excludes the first monthly payment, because this calculator adds that payment once when showing cash due.
Compare components before comparing monthly payments
Two quotes with the same monthly payment can require different cash reductions or fee payments. Keep selling price, term, residual, and mileage allowance beside each result. When checking a price negotiation, hold the other assumptions still; when checking a money-factor change, hold cap cost and residual still.
The total-cash figure adds every monthly payment, the cash reduction, and other upfront fees. It excludes a refundable security deposit and any later disposition, excess-mileage, or wear charges. Those contract items belong in a wider comparison even though they are outside this calculator's payment formula.
Use the tax treatment on the actual quote
The tax field models a percentage added to the monthly base payment. It does not select a state, look up local rules, or calculate tax on the entire vehicle value. If your transaction uses another tax method, use zero here to inspect the pre-tax components and reconcile the actual tax separately.
The calculator also omits trade equity and manufacturer-program rules. Do not enter a trade allowance as cash down without separately resolving its payoff and tax treatment. A quote whose residual exceeds adjusted cap cost needs a different treatment; the tool flags that scenario instead of producing a misleading negative depreciation payment.
Common questions
Why does my lease quote differ by a few dollars?
Check rounding, payment timing, capitalized fees, exact residual dollars, and the tax base. This worksheet uses unrounded intermediate arithmetic and a standard money-factor formula. A lessor may use different contract calculations, so reconcile the written disclosure rather than adjusting inputs just to force a match.
Does a lower money factor always make the whole deal cheaper?
It reduces the modeled rent charge when everything else stays the same. A larger cash reduction, extra fees, a different term, or a lower residual can still change the overall comparison. Review total cash and contract obligations alongside the monthly figure.
Can I save this scenario?
Use Download calculation CSV to save the entered figures and results locally. Reset example restores the illustrative inputs. The tool does not create a customer record, send an application, store a quote online, or obtain terms from a lender.
